About Us
Rooted in Denmark but shaped by four distinct musical traditions, the Lār Quartet is an international string quartet redefining the possibilities of folk music.
With members hailing from the United States, Greece, France and the United Kingdom, the ensemble brings a rich blend of cultural perspectives to a genre that rarely sees the intimacy and nuance of a traditional string quartet lineup.
Specialising in folk repertoire, mostly from northern Europe, an area still largely unexplored in the global folk scene, the Lār Quartet breathes new life into dances, ballads, and regional melodies through imaginative arrangements and deeply collaborative performance. Their sound combines the warmth and precision of classical string playing with the earthy immediacy of folk tradition, resulting in a sound that is at once refined, heartfelt, and vibrantly alive.
Whether on festival stages or in intimate venues, the Lār Quartet invites audiences into the hidden landscapes of northern European folk music, celebrating both the shared roots and the cross-border diversity that defines their musical identity.

Upcoming Events
Hidden Knowledge shines a spotlight on the folk traditions of Northern Europe; music too rarely heard on international stages, yet rich with colour, character, and centuries-old storytelling.
The Lār Quartet brings these pieces to life with delicate lyricism and spirited energy, tracing landscapes shaped by icy coastlines, midsummer dances, and intimate communal song.
From haunting modal melodies to rhythmic fiddle tunes, the program offers a vivid journey through under-represented musical voices, revealing the beauty and diversity found across the region’s folk heritage.
